This is a hate-free city: Minutemen founder declared persona non grata
Monday, April 20 2009 CLAREMONT, California-- Despite the right wing"s efforts at deception and obfuscation, pro-immigrant, pro-human rights, anti-racist, and community activists organized strong opposition to the arrival of anti-immigrant extremist Jim Gilchrist to our neighborhood. It was no coincidence that the speech was set to take place on April 20, the biggest "holiday" of the year for white supremacists.
ICE Raids Continue to Devastate Inland Empire Families
RIVERSIDE, February 7, 2009 - In urgent response to the rash of Border Patrol raids across the Inland Empire, community members convened at Riverside City Hall to express frustration with the agency"s family-devastating policies. Raids in the area have been increasing since December, when Border Patrol agents visited the San Bernardino Greyhound station, targeting holiday travelers. The demonstration comes in response to the January 29 Border Patrol raids on several day labor sites in the area.
March on Riverside Border Patrol Office: No more quotas, no more raids, no more deportations
On March 21, 2009, a peace march was held in Hollywood. The goal was to bring about the end of war on a global scale. It was a call for solidarity amongst all members of the left. I had seen the posters for months. By D-Day, I could almost hear the footsteps of the march that was going to stop the war in my head. There was no way I was going to miss this.
I spent the first twenty-four years of my life in my mother¡¯s basement in Philadelphia, spinning old records, decorating my room with upside-down American flags, and reading the Communist Manifesto. Most of my youth, I dreamed of attending a massive peace rally. At last I would be given my chance to run through the streets with blood on my face. I was ready to stop the war.

News from Around The World:
In Wake of US Supreme Court Decision, Abu-Jamal"s Appeal Supporters Mobilize around New Book, Birthday
On April 6, the US Supreme Court rejected radical journalist and former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal"s appeal for a new guilt-phase trial. The Court has not yet decided whether it will consider the Philadelphia District Attorney"s appeal of two lower court rulings that Abu-Jamal deserves a new sentencing hearing if the death penalty is to be re-instated. This means that if the Supreme Court rules in favor of the DA, Abu-Jamal could be executed without a new sentencing hearing.
In response, Abu-Jamal"s lead attorney Robert R. Bryan will be filing a "petition for re-hearing" at the US Supreme Court. Emergency meetings have been held in several cities (1, 2) to coordinate grassroots response, and over 3000 people have signed an online petition in an effort coordinated by anti-death penalty activists from Germany. Photo from December 2008 protest in Pittsburgh, PA.
The rejected appeal (technically called a petition for a "writ of certiorari") was based primarily on the US Supreme Court"s 1986 "Batson v Kentucky" ruling which stated that a defendant deserves a new trial if it can be shown that the prosecutor used peremptory strikes to remove otherwise qualified jurors simply because of their race. At Abu-Jamal"s 1982 trial, prosecutor Joseph McGill used 10 or 11 of his 15 strikes to remove otherwise acceptable black jurors. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to death in the shooting death of police officer Daniel Faulkner. Listen to Abu-Jamal"s own response, interviewed by Noelle Hanrahan of Prison Radio. [United for Peace & Justice] The Obama administration has asked Congress for an additional $83.4 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for FY2009. On the table, too, is a request for $130 billion to fund the wars in 2010. This, despite the fact that 6 in 10 Americans believe the war in Iraq was a mistake and growing numbers fear escalating war in Afghanistan.
United For Peace and Justice opposes this supplemental request and urges you to call your Representatives and Senators today and tell them that you, too, oppose the FY2009 Supplemental and you want them to stand with constituents who want to redirect our funds to reconstruction and aid, not war.
To reach the Washington switchboard, call 202-224-3121.
It is at least 10 times greater than most estimates cited in the US media, yet it is based on the only scientifically valid study of violent Iraqi deaths caused by the U.S.-led invasion of March 2003. >> Read More
