World Refugee Day in Morocco Today is World Refugee Day. I recently received an email announcing this forum for Sudanese refugees in Egypt and elsewhere. Good luck to them, and I hope the debate on the recent handling of last year¡¯s sit-in continues there. Meanwhile, in Rabat, Ursula went to a sit-in in front of UNHCR¡¯s office this morning. Here is what she reports: I wanted to write something on immigration when I came to Morocco, and I¡¯ve been researching a story for the last few weeks. The thing is, there are (at least) two types of immigration going on: the immigration of Moroccans to Europe, and the immigration of SubSaharan Africans to Morocco (and then perhaps Europe). This post will be about the second. The terrible irony being that Morocco¡ªa country from which millions have emigrated to Europe, where they face discrimination¡ªtreats immigrants and refugees on its own soil in a shameful manner.
This week"s hearings on Judge Sonia Sotomayor"s nomination to the Supreme Court represent the opening skirmish in a struggle to challenge the escalating activism of an increasingly conservative judiciary.
5 refugees pursued by the Moroccan authorities have been presented before the judge of the Court of First Instance in Rabat Monday 13 July 2009. At trial, the police officer who claims to have been attacked by refugees, became a civil plaintiff and his lawyer asked for time to "prepare the defense." A new hearing is scheduled Monday, 20 July 2009 at 13H00. The request for provisional release was rejected by the judge, our 5 brothers are still locked up and have been for more than two weeks ago.

Greetings from TRAC. Very timely Justice Department data obtained and analyzed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) show that immigration enforcement under the Obama Administration is returning to the unusually high levels that were reached under President Bush.

In Wake of US Supreme Court Decision, Abu-Jamal"s Appeal Supporters Mobilize around New Book, Birthday
On April 6, the US Supreme Court rejected radical journalist and former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal"s appeal for a new guilt-phase trial. The Court has not yet decided whether it will consider the Philadelphia District Attorney"s appeal of two lower court rulings that Abu-Jamal deserves a new sentencing hearing if the death penalty is to be re-instated. This means that if the Supreme Court rules in favor of the DA, Abu-Jamal could be executed without a new sentencing hearing.
In response, Abu-Jamal"s lead attorney Robert R. Bryan will be filing a "petition for re-hearing" at the US Supreme Court. Emergency meetings have been held in several cities (1, 2) to coordinate grassroots response, and over 3000 people have signed an online petition in an effort coordinated by anti-death penalty activists from Germany. Photo from December 2008 protest in Pittsburgh, PA.
The rejected appeal (technically called a petition for a "writ of certiorari") was based primarily on the US Supreme Court"s 1986 "Batson v Kentucky" ruling which stated that a defendant deserves a new trial if it can be shown that the prosecutor used peremptory strikes to remove otherwise qualified jurors simply because of their race. At Abu-Jamal"s 1982 trial, prosecutor Joseph McGill used 10 or 11 of his 15 strikes to remove otherwise acceptable black jurors. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to death in the shooting death of police officer Daniel Faulkner. Listen to Abu-Jamal"s own response, interviewed by Noelle Hanrahan of Prison Radio. [United for Peace & Justice] The Obama administration has asked Congress for an additional $83.4 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for FY2009. On the table, too, is a request for $130 billion to fund the wars in 2010. This, despite the fact that 6 in 10 Americans believe the war in Iraq was a mistake and growing numbers fear escalating war in Afghanistan.
United For Peace and Justice opposes this supplemental request and urges you to call your Representatives and Senators today and tell them that you, too, oppose the FY2009 Supplemental and you want them to stand with constituents who want to redirect our funds to reconstruction and aid, not war.
To reach the Washington switchboard, call 202-224-3121.
It is at least 10 times greater than most estimates cited in the US media, yet it is based on the only scientifically valid study of violent Iraqi deaths caused by the U.S.-led invasion of March 2003. >> Read More

10/11: FIDEL: THE BELLS ARE TOLLING FOR THE DOLLAR
2009-10-12
The Empire has ruled the world through economy and deceit rather than force. At the end of WWII, it had attained the privilege of minting the convertible hard currency, the monopoly over the nuclear weapon and the possession of most of the gold in the world while it was the only large-scale producer of manufactured equipment, consumer goods, food and services worldwide. However, there was a limit to the printing of paper money: the gold standard at a regular price of 35 dollars a troy ounce. This was the situation for over 25 years, until August 15, 1971, when an executive order issued by President Richard Nixon led the United States to unilaterally call off that international arrangement thus defrauding the world. I¡¯ll never tire out of repeating it. That was how it threw on the world economy its military buildup and war adventure expenses, especially the Vietnam War, which according to conservative estimates cost no less than 200 billion dollars and the lives of over 45 thousand American youths.
